Some steps taken which improved the situation:
-1)The system went into an automatic system file check and found some corrupted files. It suggested running fsck manually.

-2)After running fsck and fixing all corrupted files, I rebooted.

3) Opening the Display Settings I found out I could reset my resolution.
The only choices were 640x480 and 1280x1024 and the lower setting worked normally.

Going to the high resolution (1280x1024) resulted in the weird situation as before, when the desktop can be moved around with the mouse pointer and its dimentions are extremely high.

I am not sure what caused the file corruption. It may be something I did.
But the problem with the display settings remains to be solved.
Sorry if my bug is a false alarm, but could somebody help with my problem?

It will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
