Image corrupted for resolutions between 1280x760 and 1920x1080 for 16:9, but not lower

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

When I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, I could no longer use max resolution with my monitor. Max is 1920x1080, I can't go past 1280x720 and maintain a 16:9 ratio.

Past that, most graphics don't display correctly if at all.

I tried going through the suggestions at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting but that did not work.

The only workaround I have so far is to use a display resolution of 1280x720.

When you cay "I can't go past" what do you mean? Does X become corrupted or crash when set to that resolution? According to your xrandr output X certainly supports that resolution. Could you please explain more precisely what goes wrong.

Are you using the xrandr command line tool to set the resolution? If not, can you try that?

 $ xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1080

When I say "I can't go past" I mean that I can't increase the resolution (for 16:9) past 1280x720 without having severely distorted graphics. When I do increase past 1280x720 all I see in large parts of the screen are smears of pixels. Some of the screen (the bars at top and bottom, evolution window) is normal though, which I find quite strange. X has not crashed. I can't read the firefox window, desktop background won't display correctly.

I tried the xrandr method of changing the resolution as you suggest with the same results as using System->Preferences->Display.

Also, this happened with an upgrade from "Update Manager". If I boot from a live CD I can set the resolution to 1920x1080.

Hi twilmore888,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 472960 in your report if you think it may be related):

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'

Since the hardware is no longer available for doing troubleshooting with, we'll have to close the bug for now. However please feel free to reopen if you or anyone else has the same HW and can reproduce this issue using the latest development version of Ubuntu and is willing to do some troubleshooting with it.
