For those having troubles with ATI based cards, try adding this to your Xorg.conf:

Option "KernelModuleParm" "agplock=0"

I found that it completely removed all my random lockups with my laptop (X600 based), especially when it was doing any 3D work or running Xgl.

Feedback on how effective this line is may assist the Ubuntu team to add some stability with ATI cards.
