After the today updates in Kubuntu Karmic Alpha the login screen never shows up and I get only a black screen (not the shell).

Same for me, Kubuntu Karmic alpha 5 on an Asus A6Vc notebook. The only button working is the power button, and the system shuts down normally.
Recovery mode works, but Xorg and kdm logs don't report problems, as well as system log.

I confirm this annoying bug. I would note that at least for me in recovery mode does not update the package list, which leads to a correction first "manual" by changing the configuration files from a live cd besides the patch with an update. I also noticed that the problem could also be linked to an update to usplash because it makes a kind of fading, but I'm not sure why I did not mind the list of updated packages.

Ah, I thought it right to change the name of the bug, since this is not a problem with KDE or GNOME but KDM / GDM or Xsplash.

Is this related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180/+bug/429003
All GLX-using applications (including Xorg) crash on startup after the upgrades, at least with Nvidia's drivers.

(On startup, this crash appeared as a blank screen, with console switching with Alt+F1 not working, so I think my problem is the same as this one. Ctrl+Alt+PrintScreen+K followed by Alt+F2 gives a working console.)
