Bug Description

This particular sound card worked perfectly in Jaunty. Once upgraded to Karmic Alpha, there is no audio output when the headphones are plugged into the front headphone jack.

-The rear speaker jack works fine.
-The speakers are muted when headphones are plugged into the front headphone jack.

Tried options yet they do not work:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

Hardware is:
Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:284b] (rev 02)

More information can be found in the attached alsa-info.txt

Using pavucontrol, I am able to select the headphones as output. This is a workaround for now; It requires the pavucontrol package.

Expected behavior when plugging in headphones is to have the jack detected, mute speaker, tell ALSA route to headphones, (this is where i think is breaks) tell PulseAudio to route to headphones (which is done manually with the above workaround).

I have the same chip (Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)) and I get a different result: the headphone output works and it mutes the speakers as expected.

However, every time I reboot, alsamixer shows the headphone channel has been muted. Since the headphone channel is actually chained with the PCM channel, I get no output on speakers or headphones when I boot into Karmic.

Rocko, you may have a different codec. Can you please run the following command:

apport-collect -p alsa-base 412807

if you can also run the alsa-info.sh script from www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh we should be able to see the difference between our models and why we experience different result.

Obviously I do have a different codec. I should add that I now DON'T get a muted headphone channel on reboot, ever since pulseaudio upgraded to 1:0.9.16~test4-0ubuntu6. So my issue was probably not related at all to this bug.

pulseaudio (1:0.9.16~test5-0ubuntu2) solved the issue.

But now, I have a quick question about pavucontrol:

Shouldn't I now have 3 options in pavucontrol?:

Automatic
Analog Output
Analog Headphones

Now, even if I set it to "Analogue Output", I will get it through the headphones. That way if I want to statically set or override one output device I can. Daniel/Andres, what do you think?

Bug# 412807 seems to have re-emerged in Lucid. Plugging in headphone jack mutes speakers, but does not channel audio to headphones. Changing Output from Analog output to Analog headphones, does not channel audio to the headphones. Testing Lucid Alpha (20091210) this issue seems to have reappeared. Was working perfectly on Lucid Alpha (20091209) so this is a recent regression. Please let me know if you would like me to open a new bug for this issue.

Never mind, it was a hardware issue with the headphones. Sorry for the confusion.

Alexey, Thank you for helping in making Ubuntu better. Unfortunately I am running lucid and I don't have this issue on my hardware. If you experience a bug with jack sensing on your hardware please report a bug for your issue. This can be accomplished by running the command 'ubuntu-bug alsa-base' in a terminal.
