Bug Description

Seems to be the same problem as has always affected this printer, although some progress seems to have been made. In Jaunty the printer is immediately recognized when plugged in and I am asked if I want to download and install some plugin. However, nothing happens after I click install, the dialogue simply disappears.

The printer can still be made to function manually:

1) $ sudo apt-get install hplip-gui

2) Remove the printer via http://localhost:631 or (xubuntu settings->printing)

3) Install the printer with
"$ hp-setup

4) Run the HPLIP toolbox in Admin or Settings menu

5) Go to the actions tab for your printer and "Download Firmware"

Correction, while the above procedure will install the printer, it doesn't print correctly. Text is not positioned correctly on the pages! I'll post this as a separate bug...

I used "sudo hp-setup" to install this printer again and it worked fine. I guess the status should be "Not confirmed".

However I already had it unstalled in Ubuntu 8.10 (Interpid) and it stopped working after upgrade to 9.04 (Jaunty), probably becuase of lack of downloaded firmware (or it was downloaded but to different place than required- place that was ok in 8.10).

I have the same issue, HP 1020 is listed so you can add it. Once added the 'download aditional software' dialog appears, and does nothing after clicking OK.
So there is definitely a bug here.

I applied the hp-setup command, where apparently the firmware is downloaded, however in order to work I have to turn on the printer just before I send a job.

Printing is also (as mentioned before) with a margin offset in OpenOffice Write.
Adobe Reader prints fine.

Use to work perfectly on 8.04.

Which version of system-config-printer is installed?

Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 367821

Thanks!

For me it detected automatically and installed seemingly correctly, however printing did not work. Using the steps in the first post I got it to work. This was from a fresh ubuntu install so it's definitely a bug.

Could this be related?https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/268284 , "beh backend broken: writes temporary files into /"

The title was misleading for me, since I never heard of BEH since it crashed. The symptoms are similar (printer does not work, reinstall, then works until next error, reinstall, etc).

This security update broke my installation: http://www.ubuntulinux.org/usn/USN-780-1

In order to get it to work again I had to

1. Remove the printer from cups using http://localhost:631.

2. Remove the printer from HPLIP.

3. Reinstalling it using 'sudo hp-setup'.

Would be nice to see this bug fixed, seems like everytime cups is updated the printer stops working.

Sprax,

The output does not include the necessary printing debugging information, please execute the following command instead:
apport-collect -p cups 367821
