Bug Description

This relates to Ubun tu 8.10 (64-Bit) fully updated on a MacBook Pro rev. 3. Sound has not been a problem with Ubuntu 8.10 in the past as far as this machine is concerned, but since some recent update, there is no sound (tested with Amarok and Mozilla).

Please specify which additional information you need if any.

This bug is CRITICAL and it has to be solved URGENTLY.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit on an HP Omnibook DV3507 which has also worked fine with audio in the past. Today I rebooted and now there's no sound.. just an ominous crackle! Am not convinced this issue is confined to Macbooks.

Bugs #328869, #326864 and #325547 also appear to relate to vanishing sound in the last few days.

Have you seen this existing bug? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/272321

If you're unable to set the PCM volume at all, see related bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/315971

If this fixes the problem for you perhaps this bug should be updated to point to the PCM one so users can report that it has affected them and ensure the correct priority is assigned.

Please do update the thread to confirm whether this works for you, or the bug report may be closed while an issue remains!

If you right-click the speaker icon on the top panel, and choose "Open volume control", check you're on the Playback tab. Do you have a slider for "PCM"? Is it at max?

I already checked all possible mixer elements' positions and muting / unmuting. No change.

I now kicked pulseaudio out of my system, so I cannot answer any further questions.

As you can see above, this is a problem not only on MacBook Pros.

Personally, I do not understand why Ubuntu's developers ruin people's systems. I was under the impression that Ubuntu 8.10 was neither alpha nor beta but a final version.
