flash player not fully working on Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit Firefox 3

Bug #301791 reported by zeddock
10
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu)
Invalid
Undecided
Unassigned

Bug Description

Flash player seems to be properly installed and working but when I go to CBS.com (as an example that is repeatable...) and try to watch an episode of "The Unit", the player area has a spinning loading animation that never ends.

How can I get more information on what is or is not happening?

I have tried a completely new OS install, and I notice that on another computer which is 8.10 32bit, there is not a problem.

Thanx!

Fixing this would be moot as adobe just released a native 64-bit plugin that doesn't require nspluginwrapper. Why not implement the new plugin instead?

you can test it yourself, remove all the flash packages and download the .so from here and stick it in your firefox plugins directory:

Wow, 64bit flashplayer. I'd like to see it but rather wait for an apt download before I mess up my old flash player.

Btw, if you have problems with flash in firefox, I always recommend to try opera. It has much better flash support, go to opera.com and you can download it. They even have debs and a repo you can add to your sources.list.

um, dude... it's really not that hard. just apt-get remove
flashplugin-nonfree and put the .so file into your ~/.firefox/plugins

oh ok, first remove flash from your system with synaptic or "sudo
apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree"... then download the 64-bit
flash... and put the file in ~/.firefox/plugins, or whatever the
plugins directory is for you.

Please provide more information...

8.10 64bit installation of Ubuntu...
I also had *npwrapper.libflashplayer.so* listed in the directory of: *
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins
*After the sudo rm code you provided, I also went in and deleted that and
added the downloaded and extracted: *libflashplayer.so*

Is this correct?
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 9525320 2008-11-24 21:01 libflashplayer.so

If so, it does not work. I wonder if it must be registered with firefox
somehow?

If so, it does not work. I wonder if it must be registered with firefox somehow? Or maybe what I removed was a link to something that now is still there?

I had to remove all of the "npwrapper.libflashplayer.so" links and files. Then put the new file in those directories...

I also had to put it here:
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/
/var/lib/flashplugin-nonfree

and I think maybe a few other places that I cannot remember.

Close and open firefox.

so, there's still nsplugin files left over after an "apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree"? That's kinda odd. I'm not sure I believe you, since apt should clean up its mess automatically. Maybe it's a new bug? But, I didn't try it that way myself, since I just had a fresh install of ibex a few days ago without flash installed.

Look at the opening of this bug to see some "ls" responses I got previouse
to the apt-get remove.

BTW, I wouldn't believe me either. I am just too new to Linux. <smile>

thanks for advice, i followed it,
went to adobe's site and got newest flashplugin for 64bit,
removed all flash-pkgs and the nasty nspwrapper,
created a folder in /usr/lib called flashplugin-nonfree and extracted it there.
made simlinks to it under the plugi-folders of mozilla, firefox and iceweasel.
everything is working fine,
it is way better than before...
nevertheless, i still get 60% CPU...
is this normal?
under windows i would get for the same film 25% CPU...
what is this?

it could just be your cpu throttling down differently in linux than
windows. Check the cpufreq applet in the gnome bar or cat
/proc/cpuinfo. Basically 65% of 800MHz is better for power savings
than ~25% of 2.26GHz (in my case), so linux throttles down the cpu b/c
it can get away with it with the ondemand governor. Also, use of
compiz and video drivers and such may affect it.

also, linux (top) reports 100% for one core being fully used in a dual
core system... while windows reports 50%, so that could explain it.

thank you very much for your swift response!

in the meantime I was checking the behavior of the CPU with the new 64bit flashplugin,
while with the former set of npwrapper and flashplugin the CPU would shoot up to 60-80% on 2GHZ,
it now seems to stay on 800MHZ, indeed, even-though it shows 60% CPU.

also, the ventilation does not kick in now, which means something good.
I did the checks unplugged from power and it was behaving much better than before:
Now i would be able to watch 100min of a flash-movie (and have still some battery left) where with the old plugin battery would exhaust completely after 80min... great!

thanks again to you...

I tried it myself and zeddock is right. You have to do something like this:

sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree
sudo apt-get autoremove (removes nspluginwrapper and others)

then go to

usr/lib/firefox/plugins
usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

and in each case, remove the symbolic links in the plugin directories pointing to nspluginwrapper and put the downloaded libflashplayer.so instead. Then it works!
