After a week of running xorg from 8.04 (hardy), I'm still seeing the problem. It's not as frequent as it was, but it's still happening.
With that, I have been able to apply the fix described above (using the keyboard to move a window across the screens & back), which generally seems to work. At some point, however, X seems to really freak out after a few days of use - I've had to restart X twice in the last week on a desktop session that is supposed to remain up.
