Mr. Browne: Thank you!
I walked through these steps when my system was functioning, and succeeded
in re-creating the error (I lost mouse clicks after step 4.).
I was able to 'fix' it by following the steps. Maybe a developer can use
these to re-create the problem with the mouse input?

My system: Three displays on two NVidia cards (8600 using the 177 driver,
and an older GeForce MX using the "nv" driver), Kubuntu 8.10, 2.6.27-9
kernel.
