I recreated the problem, then tried variations of:
xmond -verbose 4 -server :0 -port 4
xev
The xmond program seemed to receive nothing from any mouse clicks.
When I <ctrl-c> out of xmond, the resulting file is 0 length.
Also, when I run it interactively, it produces no output on the screen.
Either it's getting nothing or I'm doing something wrong.
