Do you still have the Synaptics line in your config? If not, add the line
<merge key="input.x11_options.SHMConfig" type="string">1</merge> to
 /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-synaptics.fdi

Try the command synclient -l. Does that report an error too? If so, then I need to see your log file.
