Bug Description

After some time - may be several hours - the mouse stops responding to mouse clicks.

The pointer on the screen moves as normal.

My mouse goes through a KVM switch and correctly works on other machines. The mouse is a logitec 3hree button wheel mouse

The mouse will stop even when not being moved - that is i have returned to the keyboard to find the mouse has stopped. The keyboard works fine.

This bug started after upgrading to 8.10 soon after it was released. In all cases the only common application in use has been Firefox.

Restarting X by doing <ctrl><alt><backspace> in a terminal restores the mouse to working.

The InputDevice selection of xorg.conf seems to have been commented out by the upgrade with a note that HAL is now used.

Thanks for updating the above. As it doesn't seem to be a problem anymore I shall mark this bug Invalid, although it would help if you could attach the files requested for future reference should this problem arise again, or if it comes up in another users installation. Thank you.

I will send the data as soon as it fails again - it has happened about 8 times
over the last three days

I too have the same problem. After a couple of days mouse clicks stop working while the mouse pointer continues to respond. The keyboard works fine. Unplugging/re-plugging the mouse has no effect. Attached are the the files requested by https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingMouseDetection. Unfortunately, it takes days for the mouse to stop responding, so I will not be able to attach diff files until later.

Note, I am using the Logitech USB mouse. The Microsoft Wireless mouse is not in use (not batteries in it).

Not invalid...I have experienced this bug multiple times. Incomplete until it happens again so I can send log files.

Leaving as Incomplete.
I will forward this onto the developers when you provide the info.
Thank you.

OK, just had the problem occur again. Absolutely no diff in dmesg or Xorg.0.log. Can still navigate with the keyboard. xmodmap and xev show nothing funky (xev does not receive mouse events). It appears no app knows anything about the mouse (pointer does not change over window edges/firefox links), but the pointer does move.

This was triggered by opening a firefox window and gnucash...this is what triggered it the last time it happened too, but the problem does not always involve gnucash (firefox is pretty much always open).

I have never seen anything like this. Next time it happens I will plug in a wireless mouse to check whether X will recognize a new mouse.

I'm seeing much the same behaviour as Jim Hendry. I usually have Firefox open as well whenever it occurs, but it also happened me once without Firefox open (though I did have Opera open).

We still need the information requested at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingMouseDetection specifically the general information and also the "In case your mouse stops working after a while" section. After we have this info it can go onto Confirmed for the developers to have a look at it.
Thank you

OK, all base files are attached now. I can't think of a reason to attach the diff files that say "identical," so I won't.

The problem occurs without any changes to dmesg or Xorg.0.log.

Thanks for reporting this bug and giving the above supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thank you.
