Hi,
After upgrading from openSUSE 11 x86, to openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64) system, my merlin u740 3G (pcmcia) card stopped working, the card works (in the same computer) with Windows Vista and OpenSuSE 10.3 (32b).

This card is pcmcia and it works by adding one virtual USB port.

I tested it again with 8.04.3 and 9.10a3.
Hardy with wvdial works, but there are many other problems (soundcontrol has no affect, automount usbstick doesn't work, ...)
9.10a3 works also really good, connect card -> wizard -> few clicks and ready for connection :)
Karmic Koala seems do be the best working Ubuntu since Feisty Fawn.

You should definitely read the following bug posting as well:

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=407592

From looking at the dmesg output that you posted it appears to be the same issue.

Can you please post the following:

 * Computer Manufacturer
 * Computer Model
 * BIOS level installed
 * OS Names and 32/64-bit
 * Amount of RAM installed
 * PCMCIA Card (Name and Model #) that did not work

These all appear to be factors that the devs are coming to on the other post.

Pedro, please post in the other forum the above info or at least let the developers know that you are experiencing the same symptoms.

I also tried this with kernel 2.6.30 from kernel.org and it had the same issue, but the good news is that in the 31 release candidate it's fixed.
I tried with kernel 2.6.31-rc3 from kernel.org and it works perfectly. now my nvidia drivers are a bit unstable with that kernel version.
Hopefully it will all come together in the final 2.6.31 version of the kernel.
Cheers,
Pedro

Do we know which version of the Kernel will be used in 9.10?

Although I am primarily an Ubuntu user, I have participated in tracking down the same issue on the Suse bugzilla forums: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=407592

It is important to track this issue down as it appears as though it is a kernel issue that affects the whole Linux community. I also want to make sure that Ubuntu 9.10 is based off of a working version of the kernel as I like many others are dead in the water with our wireless modem cards, even with Ubuntu 9.04.

Pedro,
I am following this discussion in a number of places across the 'net. Over on Ubuntu's bug tracking system a correlated bug discussion is occurring ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/291653 ) and the person posting there notes that the issue was resolved in 2.6.31-RC2 yet seems to have re-emerged in 2.6.31-RC4.

Would you please test with 2.6.31-RC5 and see if the issue has re-emerged or if it is still resolved for you? If it has re-emerged we need to jump on the Kernel bug system and note the change so it can be tracked down and resolved in the final release, else we are hosed in the next major rev of many Linux distros as they will be based on the final release of 2.6.31.

Thanks for your time and effort on this issue.

Hi John,
I've tested it with a custom compiled kernel-2.6.31rc5 x86_64 and it works perfectly.
After untaring the kernel just did:
make oldconfig
(answered all the questions with the defaults)
make rpm

Installed the kernel rpm, ran mkinitrd, configured grub and rebooted with the new kernel.
It worked flawlessly.
I think we can give it a go!

Just reporting back that I did a test build with kernel 2.6.31-rc5 inside Ubuntu 9.04 and was able to use my Sierra Wireless Aircard 595 without issue with the default configuration (auto detected) with the NetworkManager. Granted, my NVidia drivers would not work but I assume that will get fixed by the time .31 is finalized. Lets all hope that this kernel issue is fixed for good.

(Sorry for the cross posting, just reporting back in a few bug threads for thoroughness as I suspect there are many who would not bother to read the other associated threads.)

Hi Florian,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 291653

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 291653, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
