I have the same situation with the same screenshot that Biji sent. It happens in the OpenOffice when Insert Picture > From File... the window dialog is too small and one must resize it manually and it is annoying. I remember that happened with other applications, but the one i recall now is when using OpenOffice.

This is happening to me, too. I can't recall this ever happening to me before so it might have been because of a recent update, perhaps?

This bug seems to affect all GTK applications on my Intrepid system (Linux cedx 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:06 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux). Each time I open a file dialog (by saving a file or opening one), the dialog is too small !

Same problem here. This bug is very annoying...I think it's related to compiz fusion.

I can confirm this bug on Intrepid 64bit.

Oddly enough, it seems that although clicking "Open" in say, gedit yields a small window, it occasionally results in a normal sized one.

With compiz turned off, this bug doesn't occur.

I can confirm this bug on Intrepid 32-bit (Hardy upgrade). Also using Compiz.

The problem happens even after I've run "metacity --replace", so disabling compiz doesn't seem to be the solution.

Visual Effects is also set to "None" in System/Preferences/Appearance so compiz should be disabled already when booting the computer.

I'm using an ATI Mobility 3470 graphics card with the proprietary fglrx driver.

I've got the same on Xubuntu intrepid.

I don't use compiz. This happens on multiple boxes of mine with xubuntu intrepid, both 32 and 64 bit.

BTW, this "feature" is new with Intrepid on my boxes.

I started getting this problem after I upgraded to Intrepid. It seems to be randomly intermittent; clicking "Open" in gedit repeatedly causes it to happen about half the time. Disabling Compiz makes it go away for me.

Same here....64-bit Intrepid....happens very very often.....haven't tested without Compiz, but seems pretty likely suspect.

Any help greatly appreciated.....will test or provide further system details

Cheers

Same here. Unfortunately it seems that nobody cares about this bug, although this is really annoying.

Hey All,

This is still happening and I can confirm that it happens with and WITHOUT Compiz.

Ubuntu is great....loads of things to love about it, but I sure hope the simplest of things STOP getting ignored.

Bells & whistles are fine.....but don't forget the basics.

Keep up the good work all you busy Ubuntu folks!!

Cheers

This bug happens for me too. It is very irritating, as I use open dialogues quite often in gedit, It seems to me that it opens in the correct size, then some sort of dynamic resizing happens once the window content is loaded, and at that point the size gets messed up.

The same bug also affects Suse. Here's a blog entry with a pointer to a fixed Suse package.

I'm having this bug when manually importing a directory into the rhythmbox music database. Happens every time without fail.
I tried to reproduce it with both the chess game (importing a saved game) and the Avant window navigator "Add launcher" function, but in neither application this issue popped up, and the "file selector" dialog box was properly sized.

I run a AMD54 variant of Intrepid, with a custom version of awn (I use the most current one from launchpad, which is 0.3.2-0ubuntu1~ppa5). Next to that I am also aware that Awn is not purely C, but also uses (if I'm correctly) at least python (which might explain the bug not popping up there).

AMD54 must of course be AMD64.

Is this a bug or a feature?

1) Is file dialog always too small?

2) What conditions trigger too small file dialog?

3) What are the repeatable steps to produce 2

4) Has this been fixed in Jaunty?

If the case is 1) then this should be nominated to hundred paper cuts

I can recreate this behavior:

- run gedit
- bring up the Open file dialog [Ctrl+O]
- if the size is normal, [Esc] and repeat

On my up-to-date 8.10 it occurs pretty frequently, almost 50/50 chance of the dialog being bad.
I can only recreate this with Compiz enabled, otherwise it sizes normally.

Blast from the past, man! I remember this bug. It's time to close it because 8.10 is End-of-Life and this bug has been marked as fixed elsewhere but I'm not willing to go dig up the report to dupe it. If for some freak instance someone still has this bug on a later release (12.04), please open a new bug as the apport data will be helpful there.

See you guys later!
