I have the same error after making a clean install.

Accordring to the forums it's probably related to the restricted ATI/AMD driver.
Using Enter to continue doesn't work for me though.

I use a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop with Intel dual processor and ATI graphics. I cannot get the live cd to boot, it stalls at "checking battery state". Upgrading 8.04 produced a whole series of problems, eventually stalling at the same point. Installing with the alternate disk, the same. Am I never going to be able to upgrade to 8.10?

Hi,
I haven't tried this but have a look at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683&highlight=Comprehensive+Multimedia+Video+Howtoon
the Ubuntu forums. The relevant section is at the beginning of section
5/5. I'm not sure how to use this when the live cd gets stuck at this point.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I have tried recently with the latest version of Mintlinux with the same result. I am now waiting for the release of 9.04 and hoping that this will have corrected the problem. The cause seems to be the inability of 8.10 to recognise my screen resolution of 1440x900. If 9.04 has the same problem I shall reluctantly switch to a different distributon. The latest Suse and Fedora give no problems.

9.04 is expected in April 2009. Such a ling time to (try to) resolve this bug?

when you say "the system hangs", do you mean it never finishes loading, or that it stalls there for a long time... do you actually ever arrive at the gnome desktop?

can you please attach the output of dmesg? if you could install bootchart and attach a graph, that would also be helpful...

when I say "the system hangs", I mean that after typing my user name and password to log in, the system partially reboot, and re-ask me user name and password... And so loop.
I arrive at the Gnome Desktop choosing "recovery mode" at the grub and by root shell modifying 2 files in /etc/pam.d

I don't konw how to get the output of dmesg and the graph you ask for... Sorry

2) /etc/X11/xorg.conf
3) /var/log/Xorg.0.log

(marco-assini, ignore the previous request for dmesg.log)

Also, both of you, please try booting with an empty /etc/X11/xorg.conf file...

Dear Dimitrios, and others

I am sorry for not reporting back. I have not seen this problem for
some time now. The problem here was: At the end of the booting (right
before X should be started), the system got off the "graphical bootup"
and I got this message "Checking battery state...". Here, it did not
really hang, but if I hit any key, it just continued to boot and
everything was fine. However, if I did not hit any key it stopped at
this message.

This did not happen at every bootup, but seemingly randomly.

Since I dont see this bug no more, I cannot help any further in giving
a dmesg output. What I can say is that I have Intel graphics, and not
ATI.

Best regards, Mikael

I thought it was the nvidia (173, 177 and 180) driver breaking, but I'm beginning to think it's hardware.

Russ, good to hear that the issue for you is solved with jaunty.

Hanging at the "Check battery state" message is a generic symptom that can be caused by a variety of very different kinds of bugs. Judging from the comments so far, it sounds like several people sorted them out as being due to one thing or another (e.g. having had -fglrx installed).

If anyone is still having this issue when trying to boot on jaunty, please file a NEW bug. We really need to have the log files and other information in order to conduct troubleshooting of these bugs. With a LiveCD, obviously this can be difficult, but the trick is to either switch to a console (ctrl+alt+f3) or boot into recovery mode to a console prompt. Then you can collect 'lspci -vvnn>lspci-vvnn.txt', /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old, and /var/log/gdm/* to a usb key or copying them across the network to another machine.

To get your system up, often you can switch to the vesa driver. For more information on doing this, and troubleshooting this kind of issue in general, please see the documentation at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/. The config and troubleshooting guides can be of use here, in particular.
