Bug Description

DESCRIPTION
I can't use 1024x768(vga=792).
The best I can get is 640x480(I'm not sure but it looks like it is) when I use vga=normal.
Important: this problem is only TTY related and X and KDE do work in all videomodes up to 1280x1024.

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-3-generic root=UUID=7265ceae-5b39-4ad5-a6ba-311365d1867e ro vga=792

SYSTEM
Distro: Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 5, 64-bit, CD
CPU: AMD Athlon 64
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 740 BF (LCD, native resolution: 1280x1024)
Chipset: nForce 570

LOGS
1. kernel_normal.log (vga=normal, works fine but it's only 640x480).
2. kernel_792.log (vga=792, it fails to set 1024x768, black screen).
3. kernel_795.log (vga=795, it fails to set 1280x1024, fallback to 640x480).
4. lspci-vvnn.log

HISTORY OF THE BUG
I switched from Hardy to Intrepid Alpha 5 and I noticed that 1024x768 stopped to work at all(black screen). I don't know whether this problem was introduced in 2.6.27 kernel but I know that my Hardy uses 2.6.24 kernel and 1024x768 works fine there.

MISC
There is another bug that I have with Hardy. It might be related.

I'm the bug reporter of this bug.

I installed the 2.6.26-1-rt kernel and I was having the same problem(black screen) as I have with the latest kernel. It makes me think the kernel got broken between 2.6.24.20 and 2.6.26-1-rt or it's not kernel related.

It's me again with more details, sorry for spamming the email subscription list.

I'd like to stress the fact that even though I get the black screen in virtual terminals, the OS boots successfully and I have X+GNOME with 1280x1024 (NVIDIA drivers).

same for me, tty1-6 does not run at all on my macbook pro 3.1 with intrepid beta. using the nvidia driver i just get a black screen with blinking cursor, using the nv driver i get some strange blinking chars. is this a framebuffer issue?

Same here. Noticed it ever since I upgraded to Intreped Ibex.
Now running the beta with the 2.6.27-7-generic AMD64 kernel.
No matter what value I give vga= I won't get a TTY.
Very frustrating to have to remove it and now am left with 640x480

After updating the kernel, vga=792(1024x768) mode is fixed for me.
According to the version history, the kernel developers addressed this bug in the last kernel so I think it should be fixed for everyone.

Note: I still can't use vga=795(1280x1024, see the misc section at the initial bug report) but it has never worked for me anyway.
