Bug Description

I have a USB flash drive and it worked fine in Windows XP.
Then I boot the same computer in Ubuntu and plug my USB flash drive into the USB port located on the front of my computer, Just as I did it in Windows XP.

What you expected to happen:
I was expecting the USB flash drive to be mounted automatically or at least show up when i use "sudo fdisk -l".

What happened instead:
It dose not mount automatically and it dose not show up when i use "sudo fdisk -l"

After plug the USB flash drive in I used the commend "sudo fdisk -l"
Here's the out put

Disk /dev/sda: 40.0 GB, 40000000000 bytes

My computer model is a Dell Dimension 3000 service tag: D80DL61
The USB flash drive that does not work is a 1GB Staples Relay. I uninstalled the U3 by using a uninstaller from the official site, then I formated it to FAT32 with Windows XP
I also have another USB flash drive that works fine, it is a 1GB SanDisk Cruzer mini. in FAT32 format.
My Ubuntu version is the Hardy Heron
The Kernel is 2.6.24-19-generic

Can you please take a look at #88746 and see if the workaround suggestions in the first post help?

Steps to reproduce:
1. Insert your USB 2.0 device (like a flash drive)
2. If the device is recognised and mounted properly try copying a file to it.
3. Comfirm with the 'dmesg' command that it isn't functioning properly. (I/O errors etc)
4. Remove the USB device
5. Unload ehci_hcd with 'sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd'
6. Insert your USB device again.
7. Check that everything works. (copy some files, etc.)

So I did the above procedure and it doesn't work. as It dose not mount automatically and it dose not show up when i do "sudo fdisk -l"
Then I tried "sudo depmod -a" it still doesn't work.

Does this mean this bug report is not a duplicate of #88746?
I am asking this question because people in bug #88746 seems to get their USB flash drive to work by using the procedure above when I can not access my USB flash drive what's so ever.
If this bug is a duplicate of #88746 than I will post this post over there.

Attached are the

    #uname -a > uname-a.log

    #cat /proc/version_signature > version.log

    #dmesg > dmesg.log

    #sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

It looks different to #88746. You mention you have one USB drive that works, and one that does not; can you confirm this happens even if there are inserted into the same USB port. That would definitely make it different to #88746.

If that is the case, can you eliminate the possibility that your "Relay" drive is defective by trying it on a different computer.

Yes, I used the sane USB port.
I tried "Relay" drive on another computer "IBM thinkpad" under Windows XP, it works fine.
Not to mention that the "Relay" drive works fine under the Dell Dimension 3000 when I boot it into Windows XP.
Based on the observation above, I believe that the "Relay" drive works is not defected.

Same problem here, with Relay 1GB flashdrive. It is recognized in windows XP and Vista, but not on Ubuntu Jaunty or Karmic.
I think I probably buy another flashdrive ... :s
And it's not a duplicate of the bug #88746. This flashdrive is NOT recognized at all, .
