Bug Description

[needs-packaging] Adeona

Adeona is the first Open Source system for tracking the location of your lost or stolen laptop that does not rely on a proprietary, central service. This means that you can install Adeona on your laptop and go — there's no need to rely on a single third party. What's more, Adeona addresses a critical privacy goal different from existing commercial offerings. It is privacy-preserving. This means that no one besides the owner (or an agent of the owner's choosing) can use Adeona to track a laptop. Unlike other systems, users of Adeona can rest assured that no one can abuse the system in order to track where they use their laptop.

Adeona is designed to use the Open Source OpenDHT distributed storage service to store location updates sent by a small software client installed on an owner's laptop. The client continually monitors the current location of the laptop, gathering information (such as IP addresses and local network topology) that can be used to identify its current location. The client then uses strong cryptographic mechanisms to not only encrypt the location data, but also ensure that the ciphertexts stored within OpenDHT are anonymous and unlinkable. At the same time, it is easy for an owner to retrieve location information.

Package is currently on hold pending resolution of a GPL license violation w.r.t OpenSSL. Working with upstream to resolve.

There has been no response from upstream on this issue. Marking this invalid as it can't be packaged due to licensing issues.

Could you elaborate, what is exact problem with licensing? Adeona is licensed under GPLv2 and this should be fine, afaik.

Michael Casadevall (mcasadevall) wrote :

The GPL and OpenSSL's license are incompatible; a linking exception is needed for the GPL code which adeona doesn't have. Without said exception, adeona can't be legally packaged for Ubuntu or Debian.

Please package this; it is not invalid.

Talking with upstream, they will resolve this with the next stable release, so at that time, I can package it.

Michael, I think that this is great that Adeona will be packaged to a repository in the in the not too distant future
for easy installation. Thanks.

However, I have been trying for many weeks to get it installed on my Acer Aspire 5100 laptop running
64-bit Hardy.

Please see my forum posting:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5822687

The problems could just be me, but on the other hand, there could be 64-bit install critical issues requiring resolution prior to packaging.

Thanks.

This would be a very valuable feature to make available to Ubuntu users, please make it available ASAP (ideally well integrated.. perhaps next to ubuntu one?)
