Bug Description

First of all I am confused about opening that bug since there are some similar ones over here. But this week lots of people told us that they can not connect their wpa secured connections with Ubuntu. They are mostly using USB wireless cards. We manage a local Ubuntu forum here and encounter lots of WPA complaints, so this is why i am opening this bug. Here is a list of cards that have problem with WPA:

##################

Realtek TRL8187B
ASUS WL-167G
Realtek RTL8180L
Linksys USB Wireless
Edimax USB Dongle
US Robotics 5422
Realtek TRL8187B
Airlive Turbo-G USB Dongle

##################

I myself connected to a machine above that have RTL878b via ssh and tried to examine the problem. We can see the wireless connections and try to connect. At least it conntects but disconnects after approximately 30sec to 1 min. and try again. This goes a couple of time. I am attaching a syslog file with only related parts about wifi connection.

There is no problem with Wep-based connections or connections which hasn't got wpa or wep encryption.

I can say this has occured after some latest updates but i dont know which package it is. I changed wpasupplicant package with Gutsy one, didnt work.

And also on some other distros we see this problem, too. Like Mint and this happend after latest updates.

I tried this with a IPW2200 card on my machine and it worked with no problem. So I can't say that whole cards have a problem with WPA.

There is a user reporting that he couldn't connect a WPA encrypted connection with Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG card which is exactly same as mine. I am on Intrepid and he is on Hardy. So, i think this issue has solved with Intrepid packages but i dont know which one it is.

This problem is getting bigger day by day. Please respond somehow and we inform people what is going on here.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Thank you for the answer. But I want to ask a question here. What should the Hardy users do?
We can't recommend upgrading Intrepid Ibex as a Locoteam for new or inexperienced users. So what is the solution for Hardy?

I'll ask Intrepid users to upgrade their kernel version to 2.6.27.

Regards, Serkan.

Ok, one of our members tried Intrepid Ibex Alpha 4 with four USB cards and connected to the wireless networks. But still signals are so weak for the connections.

Ok, one more report from a user.
With a Asus WL-138G card, 2.6.27 is not working. One minute after the connection, system drops the connection again.
With 2.6.26 there is not such a problem.

Thanks heartsmagic,

For those wanting to test but not upgrade their systems to the pre-release Intrepid, the best solution is to test Alpha5 via a LiveCD. You should be able to then test the newer 2.6.27 kernel without compromising your existing system. I noticed there are quite a few different cards reported here to have issues. It's actually helpful to the development teams if bug reports target a specific issue against a specific set of hardware. The reason is that different wifi cards will require different drivers and thus likely different coding fixes. Would it be possible for you to modify the description of this bug report to target a single card. For those experiencing issues with other cards, please open a new report. Thanks.

Is the kernel 2.6.27 on alpha5 different then the one come with the upgrade or alpha4? Because i added last reports here and they tried Intrepid and 2.6.27 with those cards.

There are lots of cards as you see here, if you want me to change this bug report for a single one and open a new bug report for each of them, i'll do it soon.

I have the same problem. Can't connect to my "Wippies" router when using wpa. It do however works when I'm connecting to the non encrypted connection.
Found out that if I do "sudo su" and then ''killall NetworkManager" and then restart networkmanager again with "NetworkManager" it seems to work every time. Not a very nice work around but it works until the bug is fixed.

I also have the same problem with Intrepid. When booting the system connecting to WPA never works. I need to disable WIFI with the switch and after some random tries finaly it connects with WPA.

The old versions of Ubuntu worked ok with this connection in the same computer

Looking at the attachments in your bug report, I noticed that "syslog" was flagged as patch. A patch contains changes to an Ubuntu package that will resolve a bug, however your attachment doesn't appear to be one. Subsequently I've unchecked the patch flag for it. In the future keep in mind the definition of a patch. Thanks!

Hi,

After having various problems with either the nm-applet and the wireless drivers (the wireless nic is an Intel 4965 AGN, i upgraded to 8.10 the day before yesterday. My wireless was working fine, i guess until some system updates.

Now wireless disconnects and when i try to reconnect it doesn't accept my WPA password. I reboot an then i can connect again. Kernel is the latest.

WPA also fails for me on 8.10. Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG (rev 05). WEP or unsecured work fine. Point of failure seems to be at

NetworkManager: <info> Activation (eth1/wireless): asking for new secrets
NetworkManager: <WARN> get_secrets_cb(): Couldn't get connection secrets: Requested string is empty.

Then it dies and gives up.

For me WPA works fine with hardy, kernel 2.6.24-23-generic and Intel 2200BG, Edimax EW7318USB

These use the built-in drivers, where both heartsmagic and Marlon Milla seem to have been using ndiswrapper and wpa supplicant.

lost connection every 5 minutes and the It's impossible to reconnect. I need disconnected device integrated in dell vostro 1700 with a button wait some minutes and switch on wireless and reconnect without problem. But after 5 minutes the problem there is again.

My wireless device is Wireless 4965 AG or AGN I don't exactly.

In windows vista this isn't happening so I suppose that the problem stay in supplicant part
