certain characters mess up the GUI

Bug Description

Since I installed the amd64 version of Hardy I've had a problem with characters messing up various applications. This happens to be a problem in almost every gtk+ application I use. I'm not entirely sure which characters trigger the bug.

So what exactly is the problem? The Japanese characters shouldn't be Japanese? Is this still an issue?
