I'm uncertain that this is purely a Linux phenomenon-- comment 7 of bug # 431094 is from a Windows user, and a 'Lars Erik' talked about this within yesterday's "The Official Build of 20080429 is out" Thread over on Mozillazine. (I sent him a PM there, asking him to come over here and comment). Here's his post:

"Anyone else but me that have HUGE CPU usage and I/O.
Loading some pages cause my HDD to go nuts, my A/V to scan constantly and Minefield CPU usage go 100%!!"
He says he's got an A/V scanner going wild, and most Linux Desktop users don't even bother to have one-- so I'm suspicious that he might be on Windows.
