I think for now the best course of action is to mark this bug "invalid" ("closed") and if you experience it again later (or reproduce it) you can report a new bug. If you end up reproducing the bug go ahead and attach the file which contains the corrupt characters and anything else this page suggests: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUpdateManager
