After a bit of trial and error, I ran this command
SPROM=$(find /sys/devices -name ssb_sprom)
and then
sudo cp nattgew_sprom_new $SPROM
and they completed without errors, and
cat $SPROM
seemed to show what you posted for the revised contents.
Wow, it connects with b43 now! Amazing! And it seems much better that bcm43xx so far. Does this do anything for the status of this bug?

I just noticed it in the changelog of the latest linux-libc-dev that update manager sees.
