Bug Description

I use ubuntu from a few years on my portable HP Pavilion 14. In the last actualization to ubuntu 17.10, i can't connect my portable to a projector by HDMI. When i connect, the projector light blinks. If i change to only projector, it works good.
Also, i have a problem with de DVD player. When i put a DVD film, it is not seen correctly with the DVD player of ubuntu, nor either with VLC.
Can you tell me if in future revisions you can solve this problems? I don't want to change ubuntu by another linux system.
thanks and sorry by my english language.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1735976/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

to this bug. I do agree that there seems to be a connection.

If you ask for the package, I don't know if there is a "boot package", but the problem is at boot time.
In my case I finally figured out where the audio clicks come from. It turns out that the boot process is turning off and on the monitor itself. I see the monitor LED go off, and then there is an audio click. Then it goes back on again. It will click like this on the order of 10+ times during the boot process.
The problem began with 17.10. It seems connected to the change from Unity to Gnome.

While this is not a security issue, it is an issue which may cause hardware damage.
Turning the monitor on and off 10+ times during a boot can't add health to the monitor itself.

This morning it took 3 failed attempts to boot up the computer.
I thought perhaps manually turning off and on the monitor might help.
It didn't. There is some loop in the boot code, at exactly the time where it presents the dialog which user to choose, which turned off again my manually turned on monitor. It will continue to audio click away, turning off and on the monitor.
The end result is I can't use the computer. The only solution is to hardware turn off the computer itself and hope that maybe the next time around it just might catch itself in a good state without the endless loop when it is asking which user to choose.

I remove my objections to the boot routine. It was a hardware problem.
This morning things were so bad that I decided to switch monitors.
I unplugged the VGA connectors from both monitors, and swapped them.
The "new" configuration was much better, with no turning off of the monitor.
The next step was to switch back. Again all was well.
Conclusion: a hardware problem, probably one of the pins in the VGA connector was intermittent.

It just happened that the problem started when I upgraded to 17.10.
I am happy that I can rely on Ubuntu as I have relied on it for years.
Sometimes it is hardware, and not software....
