Wish: Removable Mediums, Permissions and Multiple Users

A multiuser system with local harddisk is usually setup correctly. at least correct enough to admin itself when it comes to permissions. removable mediums is another story entirely, One thing that burns me beyond compare is trying to secure unforeseen mediums that may be writable. It is by no way trivial and not everyone on the system should have such a right. permissions on unpredictable mediums should be far more easily controlled. at the moment. it appears impossible. Could this be made easier?

by mediums I mean, USB Disk, Video/Camera or SD, Memory Stick, etc. Plugging these mediums into a system and trying to control who can read, write, exec them is by no way trivial. It's virtually impossible. by unforeseen, there is no way to lock down these external mediums *before* they're attached and mounted. unlike harddisk, unforeseen mediums are just far too dynamic for users to have any kind of trivial control over them. this is where harddisk and external medium differ like night and day. It would be nice if full control over this type of medium was as simple as controlling the local harddisk.

I can't follow your meaning. Could you be more specific?

This report was filed a long time ago. It had to do with how external disk weren't easy to control if you weren't root and how if one user took ownership of a disk (completely by accident, by design) no one else had control of it. As of late I could not test a multiple user system but external disk on a single user system seem just fine.
