In my laptop (DELL Latitude X200) I found that the pointer disappears ONLY when I change the brightness of the screen with the combination of keys: Fn+up Fn+down.
To bring the pointer back, thanks to a post on ubuntuforums, it suffices to switch to the terminal mode (CTRL+ALT+F1), modify there again the brightness and go back to the graphical mode (CTRL+ALT+F7): the pointer will be visible without any brute force restart...
