I'm not sure what repositories are, but I
searched on 'repos' in synaptic and all the
packages that came up were active.

I should explain that I'm running ubuntu in a
virtual machine (Parallels on a MacBook). If
there is no easy fix, I will abandon the
installation and find a Windows copy to install.
I just need to run a few small programs.
