What does the command ifconfig and dmesg say? I know it is a live cd and therefore it may be very difficult for you to put this information here. I just want to know if ifconfig shows at least a device called "eth0". Look if it is there. If it is not, then look what the command dmesg says in a terminal. Look for messages like this:
[ 39.057016] eth0: RealTek RTL8139 at 0xd4858000, 00:50:ba:b4:81:68, IRQ 10
[ 39.057023] eth0: Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8139C'
This means my network adaptor is found.
Do you maybe use a DSL-connection? then you may want to configure your connection with the command "pppoeconf"
To open a terminal press on the middle button of your mouse and select terminal.
Thank you for testing Xubuntu Gutsy!
