Yes, the 2D performance is better with the NV driver. I have been using the desktop now without desktop effects (they were disabled completely).
Once I enabled them, the system feels much more responsive, so I guess is a bug in nvidia drivers when using only 2D. When it was on 2D mode if i tried to move a totem window that was playing a video, the video would freeze until I finished moving the window. Now with desktop effects enabled, this does not happen.
