Under KDE, just found the following solution.

When you plug in a USB device, an icon for it should appear on your desktop.
Click on it and the device will be mounted and also listed in /media.
For automatic mounting, right-click on the icon,
select Properties -> Mounting -> "Mount automatically"
You may also adapt the name of the Mountpoint.
