2 Nils - maybe it is your fault, not Linux? Or you should try KDE instead of Gnome...
Nothing personal, it just seems strange to hear that the stuff you mentioned does not work. My PC at home runs latest Ubuntu with KDE installed (I use KDE, but my little sister prefers Gnome, so I keep it just for her) - and I have all of the stuff you mentioned working well. And even better than in Windows. Even installation (of what needs to be installed) was as simple as typing apt-get install in the console...
