Long gone are the days of behaving like a gentleman and getting treated with respect as a result.  If you think you might be shy&embarrassed then read up on Richard Stallman's philosophies or get the slightly more corporate approach from the Free Software Foundation.  Either should help you clarify your thoughts and maybe give you ideas or good justifications.
