2008-05-16 06:54:24 Prateek Karandikar description The Ubuntu website should contain a comprehensive explanation of the various installation media available, which are supported and which are not, what being supported means, and the methods of obtaining these media. As far as I know we have the desktop CD, alternate CD, DVD, server CD, and minimal CD. Maybe there are more, I don't know. I came to know of the existence of the minimal CD quite recently. Then there's the added complication that the desktop and alternate CDs are different for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, etc, but there's only one server CD. The page should give a complete list of these types of installation/upgrade media, and describe what they contain, and so on (eg, given that the DVD is much larger than the CDs, what all goodies does it have?). https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-website/+bug/177671 has some discussion about the distinction between releases.ubuntu.com and cdimage.ubuntu.com , and indicates that the DVD images are not supported. These issues, including what it means to be supported, need to be addressed. For example, I'm sure a DVD image of a final release is "more" supported than a desktop or alternate CD image of an alpha release. Another issue is the duplication in releases.ubuntu.com: it has 7.10, 8.04, etc, as well as gutsy, hardy, etc folders. How are these different? Finally, the page should explain the various "official" methods of obtaining the images over the internet. AFAIK, there's http, ftp, rsync, Bittorrent, Jigdo, and metalink. Maybe there are more, I haven't seen a comprehensive list anywhere. The page should, for example, mention facts like Jigdo not being available for desktop CDs (at least http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ seems to indicate this, but I might be wrong). Currently, it's not easy getting answers to some of the questions raised here.
