Bug Description

When calling companies that you are a customer of, it is sometimes helpful to record the phone calls, so they don's scam you.

Right now this feature seems not implemented in ubuntu touch

Note that, in many countries, recording of phone conversations is illegal. At the very least, such a feature would probably have to be modified/disabled on a country-per-country basis.

For all I know it is not illigal in most countries, but you need another person consent to do it. That's why you get all that "this call may be recorded" message when you call companies.

More important would be question if it is illigal to enable device to record such conversation. I guess its ok, but I am not a lawyer nad I live in the UK.

Recording a phone call without the other's consent is illegal in South Africa as well, and taken rather seriously too. As Michi said, this feature will need to ensure that BOTH caller and callee are FULLY aware that the conversation is being recorded, or else it will need to be carefully configured on a country-to-country basis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_recording_laws)

This is a feature which is not a necessity for the functionality of the device.
Since it is not clear what is or is not allowed from the legal point of view, it would be probably wise to postpone it and review at a later point in time.

summary: - Can not record phone call

FTR I agree this feature is not a requirement (at least until one of our customers requests it).

While I don't think this should be a basic functionality of the dialer-app, at the same time our app lifecycle design and (lack of?) APIs would probably not make it possible to implement such feature otherwise (as a 3rd party app).

Invalidating this bug is like saying "we should not allow calling people, because someone can make a call and threaten others" - which is also illegal. It's not a feature problem, it's the users responsibility. Say, before the record button can be pushed, show a confirmation dialog saying something along the line "You should ensure recording a phone call is legal in your country before proceeding".

I fully agree with the last comment. The same is with cars: While it is perhaps illegal in many countries to drive more than 130 km per hour, it is not illegal to build or sell cars which could do.

>>ANY<< ancient NOKIA phone was able to record a phone call!!!
I miss it when someone wants to give me an address, a phone number or any data that I have to write down with a pencil.

And this discussion about "illegal" made me laugh :-)
There are dash cams for Your car which can record whatever they like as You drive. It is not illegal to record. It may be illegal to use the recording in a certain way. As a private person You don't have to warn anyone that he/she will be recorded. You as a private person are responsible for the recording. If You are a company, You have to warn, cause there is no one responsible for the recording and many company employees may have access to the recording. Only because of that You have to be warned. Secret services also record us all all of the time. As far as they are responsible for what they do, they do not have to warn You.
