Bug Description

Image: Hirsute 21.04 (20210415 daily build)

Device: Dell Precision 5750

After installing 21.04, the sound card is unavailable. In Sound Settings, there is only one choice: "Dummy Output" .

The only way to hear sound is to connect a Bluetooth speaker.

Note: this device was enabled with 20.04 and 5.6.0-1035-oem kernel:

Dell Precision 5750 is a hardware platform using Intel Soundwire technology. The current official support scope on this certified platform is only targeting 20.04, with 5.10 oem kernel.

The platform is supported by "oem-somerville-bronn-meta" meta packages, it's only available in 20.04.

% rmadison oem-somerville-bronn-meta
 oem-somerville-bronn-meta | 20.04~ubuntu1 | focal-updates | source, all

I'm affected by this bug, and I can confirm that the root cause is a misconfiguration of kernel flags as described in this mailing list:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=976791#35

I've used the ubuntu wiki Build Your Own kernel guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel) to enable the CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_USER_FRIENDLY_LONG_NAMES=y option, and I can confirm it works.

Is there any chance that we can get the configuration options into the Ubuntu builds as follows?
CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_USER_FRIENDLY_LONG_NAMES=y
CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_SOUNDWIRE_SOF_MACH=m

Seems like debian has already fixed this misconfiguration.

Thanks Herczeg Zsolt. I was able to compile latest kernel with those settings and it works for my Dell XPS 9700. Except for the headset microphone. Does anyone else have problems with headset microphone?

Yes, my bluetooth headset mic is detected (Escape 500 ANC) but no sound is received. Also when I try HSP/HPF output the sound is Dalek-y, high-fidelity is fine.

Haven't try the headset microphone input, but I believe it may be a separate bug cause i've seen error reports for that on 20.04/20.10 versions with DKMS drivees. I'll try the headset input as soon as I get my hands on a 4-wire headset and check the status on my machine.

Is there any estimated release date for the fixed kernel for hirstue?

I've connected USB sound card "Sound Blaster Play! 3" and Headset Microphone works just great. So headset microphone on XPS 9700 doesn't work due problem with drivers. I suspect that Dell put some non standard solution for switching between Internal Microphone and Headset Microphone because when I deleted from Windows 10 external utility called Max Audio Windows stopped switching to headset microphone whenever I plug headphones even when I select it manually. After reinstall of Max Audio it started to work as expected. Does anyone have clue to this annoying problem with Headset Microphone?

A release date would be great, I have to boot back (insert other OS here) to use my mic+speakers

Same here. Would be great to have an estimated release date.

Herczeg Zsolt (herczegzsolt) wrote :

~mesouug I've tested my XPS 9700 on the self-compiled ubuntu kernel, and it works great with a 4-pin plug, even the microphone input of the headset is fully functional. There may be hardware differences within the XPS 9700 line as well, but the driver must be fully functional for at least some of the hardware sold.

Are you confident your headset should be compatible? Not all 4-pin headphones have the same pin order, which was historically a common problem.

@heytimc

Maybe the issue on your machine is same as this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1935850

Let us track this new issue in #1935850.

I'm on Ubuntu 20.10 and security updates are no longer being provided. The recommendation is to upgrade to 21.04, but I want to avoid this issue. I could upgrade the kernel, but I wonder when the kernel fixes will appear in an Ubuntu release so I can simply upgrade Ubuntu?
