Ok, there is definitely a permissions problem.

What are the permissions on /home/robru?
What are the permissions on /home/robru/.machines

Could you also try with machines not being a hidden directory? The libvirt security plugin may be preventing writing to hidden directories.

Do you get anything if you type "dmesg | grep DENIED"?
