Also FYI, shipit.ubuntu.com only sends CDs and not DVDs.

It would seem that something with either the Kernel or power management is failing to poweroff your laptop.
Can you open Synaptic (System->Administration->Synaptic) and look for linux-backports-modules and instal it?

After that reboot, and test if Ubuntu is capable of powering off.
