I can confirm that removing the synaptic driver as RainerB suggests, works perfectly!

Thanks so much RainerB I had struggled with this for a few days now... even jumped between distro's.

I had the same symptoms... Mouse pad working but keyboard non-responsive.. removed the synaptics driver.. did a hidd --connect, and voila.
