Just to be clear,

The test kernel mentioned above fixes a bug with the way load is calculated on the -EC2 kernels in Lucid. The fix reverts a patch that was applied to Lucid for a different load accounting bug for tickless kernels. However the -EC2 kernels are not tickless and as such the accounting logic was broken. The Lucid kernels, and the test kernels have been tested extensively on different loads, and compared to the Karmic kernel, and the test kernel fixes the load reporting as expected but does not change any other behavior of the Lucid kernel.

The only reason to use the test kernel is for resolution of the phantom load issue. It does not address any other problems on Lucid. Lucid is a different kernel than Karmic and will have different performance characteristics for some loads. If you try the test kernel and are experiencing performance regressions please open a separate bug.
