Same issue on Dell XPS L501X with "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad", except I don't get any 4-finger gestures (my touchpad may not support that?)

Could this have something to do with the problem?:

$ sudo mtview /dev/input/event8
error: could not grab the device
