Don't just focus on grammar and similar academic stuff.

Approach learning a new language the same way you learned your mother tongue as a child. Listen to it a lot and speak it a lot. Don't worry about the mistakes you make. Build up fluency of expression and fix the grammatical issues one by one at your own pace.
