For me it works after running pm-suspend but I don't need to press the volume buttons or adjust the volume in any way.
via ssh:

$sudo pm-suspend
$export DISPLAY=:0
$canberra-gtk-play --file=/usr/share/sounds/gnome/default/alerts/glass.ogg
