Bug Description

Selecting a selecting a console application from the menu such as htop should open that program within the system's default terminal (mate-terminal). Instead, it opens the program within xterm.

Changing the default terminal, using update-alternatives or creating a new user with default settings does not remedy this; programs will use xterm anyway.

This can be tested on the live image/ISO and is easily reproducible.

Simply install htop and open it from a panel menu; it will open in xterm. It will always occur with launchers that are loaded from the desktop or file browser, the default 'Menu Bar' panel applet and the 'Main Menu' applet. The bug does not occur with the 'MATE Menu'/Advanced MATE Menu applet, which opens terminal applications in the user's preferred terminal as normal.

Ahem, I can reproduce this in 16.04. (at least for htop)
Are you using default MATE 1.12.1 on your 16.04 install or did you set up 1.14 using the ppa?

I just tried 16.04 on a live image (because I've upgraded my only MATE machine to 16.10 so I don't have the 16.04 install anymore) and I can confirm that the bug is occurring there too. This is on MATE desktop 1.12.1 on 16.04.

I will update the bug description. Thanks for your input!

The actual problem is in GLib (they try gnome-terminal first, then fall back to xterm).
See the upstream report for more info:

I guess we'll have to work around that in mate-panel.

This is an unsupported release now. Please think to install the next LTS 'Bionic 18.04'
