Bug Description

Set MATE interface to be Mutiny from the MATE Tweak tool. Now go to the MATE main menu, under System Tools, and open MATE terminal. Now right click on its icon in the Mutiny dock and select "Pin MATE Terminal to the dock" . Close the terminal window. Click on the pinned terminal launcher on the Mutiny dock. It will launch successfully. Now right click on the terminal launcher icon in the Mutiny dock. No option is listed to launch a second instance of the terminal application in the context menu.

This same issue occurs with Galculator and Pluma, and may be universal to all other apps that are pinned to the dock. It doesn't seem to occur when the apps are manually added to the dock. For example, go to the MATE main menu, under System Tools, and right click on the MATE terminal app. Select "Add this launcher to panel." Now click on the new terminal icon on the dock. The first window will open successfully. Now right click on the new terminal icon in the panel. The option to Launch a new window is now present in the context menu. Selecting this option will successfully launch a second window. It is only when the application is pinned that the option is not present in the context menu.

This issue was observed on Ubuntu MATE 16.04 Beta 1

Hi,

I'm the author of the mate dock applet.

Although there's no right click option, the applet does support starting a new instance of an app. Simply hold down either of the <shift> keys and click the app's dock icon. This works on all of the apps (Terminal, Galculator and Pluma) listed above.

Its actually intended that this option doesn't appear in the menu. There are a couple of reasons for this:

 1) not all apps support running more than one instance. A lot of them do but some (e.g. Gimp, Transmission, Telegram) don't. I don't want to include a menu option which may or may not do anything....

 2) some apps do explicitly allow this (e.g. Chrome, Firefox) in their .desktop file. The applet supports this and will create right click menu options it finds specified in .desktop files.

So the functionality is there but not obvious. At some point in the near future (but probably not till after 16.04 has been released) I'm going to add a 'hints and tips' section to the About dialog. This will include detail about the <shift> click shortcut and also mention that it won't work with all apps.

Hope this is useful...

Convention in other docks has been to launch additional application instances via a middle click. Could that be added?
