As suggested here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2249774, a workaround is to upgrade to gnome staging. The forum post suggests testing, but staging solved all problems for me:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 sudo apt-add-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
This can of course introduce other problems.
