I could get a signal to an external screen from the HP Elitebook 8560p.
As I expected, it failed to boot to the current Lubuntu Groovy iso file.
In mkusb's settings menu for a persistent live drive I selected
- MSDOS partition table
- usb-pack-efi
and I could boot to this persistent live system.
So my conclusion is that we forgot about these old HP computers, when we accepted a GPT for the Groovy iso files. They simply refuse to boot via grub and GPT in BIOS mode.

I am part of this problem: I should have remembered and warned about it, but maybe because my son's computer is broken, it disappeared from my memory until I read this bug report.
