Creating a Live Only USB using 20.10 20200924 and 12.9.3 ave similar results to the Persistent install.

Worked fine in BIOS mode.

Gave initramfs unpacking error in UEFI mode plain persistent boot.

Gave initramfs unpacking error in UEFI mode persistent boot with nomodeset edit, but quickly continued booting to desktop.

Safe Graphic Mode boot also had initramfs unpacking error in UEFI mode but continued on to Language screen and beyond.

This is similar to my experience trying to boot ISO files directly, but I only recall the unpacking error that continued to boot with the Live only USB.
