I found this is a DNS issue:

[root@localhost ~]# cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 10.11.5.19
search localdomain

After I changed the resolver to 192.168.23.1 (the virthost address) it's all speedy as it should be.
