Are you sure you are not Torrenting something? I usually deliberately leave my torrenting-client on for a while after i download something with the aim of uploading it 2 or 3 times before switching it off. The defaults are to upload as much as possible but i usually throttle that down using the torrenting-clients settings menu.
Have you donwloaded something recently that downloaded quite quickly? If so that was probably a torrented file and you are still letting it get uploaded from your machine.
